Strolling through old Tokyo
Recently, one of my foreign friends recommended the Edo Tokyo Open Air Museum (not to be confused with the Edo Tokyo Museum in Sumida). Even though open air museums usually tend to be rather dull, he reassured me this would be worthwhile. Well, having been there the past weekend, I couldn’t agree more! Located a couple of stations down the Chuo line from Shinjuku, within Koganei Park, this place offers quite a unique experience that is almost like stepping into old Tokyo at various times throughout history.
Regardless of whether your inside a soy sauce shop from the 1930s, a public bath house from the turn of the 20th century, or a simple farm house from some time in the 18th century, the museum manages to recreate surprisingly authentic surroundings. If you seek to experience a very different side of Tokyo, aside from the concrete jungle, this is a fantastic place to visit.
While in the area, have a look around the Kichijoji neighborhood! Not only are there a bunch of cute little coffee shops and restaurants, the nearby Inokashira Park is also a nice green getaway spot right next to the station.
